Finished reading: Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich 📚
An unrelenting critique of compulsory education—and the societies that make such an arrangement thinkable. As my introduction to Illich’s work, Deschooling Society definitely whet my appetite for more. A wonderfully destabilizing book.
The alternative to dependence on schools is not the use of public resources for some new device which “makes” people learn; rather it is the creation of a new style of educational relationship between man and his environment. To foster this style, attitudes toward growing up, the tools available for learning, and the quality and structure of daily life will have to change concurrently.
A child on the streets of New York never touches anything which has not been scientifically developed, engineered, planned, and sold to someone. Even the trees are there because the Parks Department decided to put them there.
Stumbled upon a video, produced by Fuller Seminary, in which Bono and Eugene Peterson discuss the Psalms. So, my week’s off to a pretty good start.
